The short version

A forced air incubator with a fan holds a far more even temperature and is more forgiving of a first attempt, which is why it generally produces better hatch rates. A still air incubator is cheaper and works, but heat stratifies inside it, so the temperature is measured at the top of the egg rather than in the air, and the target is higher: commonly around 101 to 102 degrees Fahrenheit at egg top level against about 99.5 in a forced air machine. Getting that distinction wrong is the most common reason a first still air hatch fails.

Ambient conditions vary enormously, so the weight method is more reliable than any fixed number.

Why did my eggs not hatch?

The usual causes are temperature error, inadequate turning, humidity too high or too low, poor egg storage or handling before setting, infertile eggs, and opening the incubator during lockdown. Candling at day seven and again at fourteen tells you whether the eggs were fertile and developing, which narrows the problem substantially. Keep a written log of temperature and humidity so the next attempt has something to work from.

Should I help a chick out of the shell?

Usually not. A chick that has pipped and then rested for many hours is often doing exactly what it should while it absorbs the yolk and the blood vessels in the membrane recede. Assisting early causes bleeding and often kills the chick. Chicks that genuinely cannot get out are frequently the ones with an underlying problem.
